Accutane Recall Information

Accutane Lawsuit 2011

Accutane is a very serious and powerful drug.  It was first used for chemotherapy. Then it was used to also treat acne.

In 2009, Roche Holding AG, the manufacturer, conducted an Accutane recall.  The company claimed it had lost market share from generics.  But it also admitted that it had spent money on personal injury lawsuits because it had injured people.  Those lawsuits were brought by people Accutane bowel injuries.  Accutane was recalled not just in the United States, but also in Austria, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Norway and Germany.

Long ago, Accutane was used as synthetic form of Vitamin A for the treatment of cancer.  It is very good at killing cells.  The main ingredient is Isotretinion.  This was first made by Swiss based Hoffman La-Roche Pharmaceuticals. This strong drug made lots of money for the company.  In fact, the company made more than $1.2 billion dollars each and every according to some estimates.

The drug works well on acne.  Unfortunately, it also works well to injure people.  It is common knowledge that chemotherapy drugs have serious side effects.  But it is not common knowledge that Accutane is a chemotherapy drug.  Roche “conveniently” hid this fact so it could make more money.

Severe Accutane side effects include bowel diseases, most commonly inflammatory bowel disease, also known as IBD.  IBD is actually a set of bowel disorders that include Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and ulcerative proctitis.  This disease can affect a person over a lifetime. It can come and go every day, week, year or decade.  It can be very inconvenient, frustrating, embarrassing and painful.  Sometimes, drastic surgery is needed to remove a person’s entire bowel!  That is what Roche did to its customers.

While people were getting inured, Roche was sitting back, collecting billions of dollars and claiming that there was not enough evidence to link Accutane with bowel disease.  Clearly, this is not true.  Scientific journals have concluded there is a link between Accutane and IBD.  In one medical study, the researchers concluded that Accutane users are four times more likely to have bowel disease than people who have not used the drug. Now that’s a link!

One of the side effects of the durgs is Accutane inflammatory bowel disease.  IBD is a very painful condition for many.  Symptoms include pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, cramping, bloating and constipation.

Ulcerative colitis is a form of IBD that has hurt many users of Accutane.  Another is Crohn’s disease.  These Accutane side effects can require drugs, treatments and even surgery.  In many cases, there is no cure.

There are thousands of Accutane lawsuits that have been filed.  Additional cases are being filed on a daily basis.  Of all the Accutane lawsuits that have gone to trial, Roche has lost every single one because every jury has concluded the drug is dangerous and Roche did not properly warn about those dangers. About $50 in damages has been awarded to injured persons.

If you took Accutane and have inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, make sure you contact an Accutane lawyer.  You may be entitled to a large cash award.
