Accutane Lawsuit Information

Nearly all Accutane lawsuits concentrate on two primary health conditions: Accutane ulcerative colitis and also Accutane Crohn’s disease. Both of these are conditions are thought of as different types of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). They can people who develop them considerable problems that can last a lifetime. Because there is no cure for either one of these disease, the people who have them must treat symptoms instead of the underlying cause.

At this time, there are well over 3500 Accutane lawsuits that have been filed in a mass tort action in New Jersey. Several cases have already gone to trial. In all of them, the jury concluded Accutane was defective and that the manufacturer did not properly warn about the defects.

Additional trials are coming up this year. For example, this August, there will be a retrial of the case of Kamie Kendall. That Accutane lawsuit went to trial in 2008 and the jury awarded a verdict of $10.5 million dollars. Roche appealed the verdict and the appellate court sent the case back down to the trial court for a new trial.

Kendall has been having problems for many years. She first started taking Accutane at the age of 12. By the time she was 14, she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. At the tiem of her trial in 2008, she was 24 years old, so she’s been living with ulcerative colitis for 10 years now.

Accutane Ulcerative Colitis

Accutane ulcerative colitis is a medical condition that results in sores (ulcers) and inflammation in the digestive tract, most often in colon and anus. What happens is the ulcers grow in areas where inflammation has eliminated cells that project the colon. This causes bleeding and the formation of puss. This leads to various symptoms such as diarrhea and bloody stools.

Kendall’s case was so severe that she had to have her entire colon surgically removed. In fact, 25-40% of persons with Accutane ulcerative colitis may need to have their colons removed using a procedure known as proctocolectomy. The reason this is needed is the severe symptoms that occur such as disease, colon rupture, massive bleeding and when other treatments don’t work.

Accutane Crohn’s Disease

Accutane Crohn’s disease is another form of inflammatory bowel disease. It is similar in certain ways to ulcerative colitis. For example, both conditions occur in the digestive system. With Crohn’s disease, however, the inflammation is usually deeper in the intestinal lining. Also, Crohn’s disease can occur anywhere in the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis usually develops in the anus and colon.

There are a number of complications that can result from Accutane inflammatory bowel disease. For example, with Crohn’s disease can result in sores that can go through the digestive system and affect other areas of the body such as the bladder. Surgery may be required to fix the problems caused by these conditions. .
